Practical trip planning

Vietnam travel guide 2026: Why this page is useful

Plan a more useful Vietnam trip with a clear route, realistic transport choices and mobile-first local tips. This public guide gives you the essentials; eligible Roaming4You eSIM purchases unlock the richer local guide with curated places, maps and trip tools.

Places this guide helps you plan
  • Hanoi & Old Quarter
  • Ninh Binh
  • Ha Giang
  • Ha Long / Cat Ba
  • Hoi An & central Vietnam
  • Ho Chi Minh City & the south

Build the route around regions, not checklists

Vietnam is long and the travel experience changes sharply from north to south. A balanced first trip often combines Hanoi and Ninh Binh in the north, one mountain or bay experience, a central stop such as Hoi An, Da Nang or Hue, and the south only if your available days justify the transfer. Ha Giang deserves its own time rather than being squeezed into a rushed itinerary.

Weather changes by region

There is no single “best month” for the whole country. Northern, central and southern Vietnam can have different rain and temperature patterns at the same time. Check the forecast for the exact regions on your route shortly before departure and keep one flexible half-day for weather-sensitive activities such as viewpoints, boat trips or mountain roads.

Transport: choose comfort where it saves a day

Trains and sleeper buses can be useful, while domestic flights save time on long north–south jumps. In cities, ride-hailing and hotel-arranged transfers simplify arrivals. If you plan to ride a motorbike, verify licence, insurance and local rules before travelling; mountain roads such as Ha Giang are spectacular but should not be treated like an ordinary city ride.

Food is part of the route

Hanoi, central Vietnam and the south each have distinct dishes and eating styles. Use busy, well-reviewed places as a starting point, but leave room for markets, coffee culture and regional specialities. The premium guide focuses on practical selections rather than an endless directory, so it is easier to decide where to go from your phone.

Stay connected before you need the map

Install your eSIM before departure when possible and keep the QR and installation details available offline. Connectivity matters most on arrival, during transfers and when opening maps, bookings or translation tools. Roaming4You’s Vietnam plan uses partner mobile networks shown on the live product page, so always check the current plan details before buying.
